I never had any major issues with my weight growing up. Once I hit 40, I noticed my weight started to climb. I tried hard to lose weight using some popular fad diets. Most of them made me feel as though I was torturing myself. The results were always the same – initial weight loss followed by rapid gain of all the lost weight. I was a victim of the yo-yo effect and therefore, as the result, I achieved nothing. By 46 I had had enough.
I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 3 years ago. I knew that I was supposed to be monitoring my daily intake as well as my blood sugar. When I turned 46, my insulin needs kept climbing. I knew I was not being as diligent as I needed to be to maintain my health. In addition to elevated blood sugars, my blood pressure was out of control and my blood lipids were way above normal. I was on track to have a heart attack or stroke if something didn’t change.
As a nurse and health educator, I am familiar with the correlation between obesity and increased risk of certain medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. I can truly say that my own case of obesity is quite comparable with other forms of addiction. It is tantamount to loss of control. No amount of intelligence or awareness that I was harming myself could motivate me to lose weight. There are moments when I would get serious and start watching my intake and blood sugars. Then for some reason I would lose my focus and revert back to my bad habits.
Finally at 46, after a bleak doctor’s appointment, it hit me that I needed help to change. The weight needed to come off, but not in a quick manner where I would gain it back. I needed a plan that I could continue for a lifetime. I was still so young, I was hoping to reverse some of the damage I had caused. Lucky for me I found Vida180. Deciding to take the first step was the hardest part. The plan was easy to follow. All of a sudden I was eating healthier and actually being encouraged to eat 5 times a day!
The best part of Vida180 is that the majority of the recipes are diabetic friendly. I could not believe the variety of food that was now available to me. I started cooking again. The Vida180 recipes are easy to prepare, taste fresh and delicious.
Admittedly, I find it difficult at times not to fall into temptation. High calorie snacks and fast food is within easy reach at the mall or on every corner. I have found it is just as easy to grab a piece of fruit or bring cut up veggies with hummus for a snack. The key for me has been consistency and preparation. I won’t be deceptive and say I have not given into temptation, but I learned that if I stop at a reasonable portion it is OK for a once in a while treat. I just make sure my rare treat does not become a daily occurrence. My Vida180 Nutritionist guided me through the process so I was able to make the best choices possible. Journaling and keeping up with my Vida180 community has kept me on track. This journey has been worth it and I am very proud of my achievements. I recommend Vida180 to anyone who is overweight. With my 66 lb weight loss, I feel like I have reclaimed my youth and my health.
